6. Blog Assignment #6: Due Thursday, May 31, 2012 by Midnight
Research at least four different creative pieces (of different genres) about 9/11 (songs, poems, short stories, artwork, etc.). In your post, make sure to include the genre, title, and author/creator of each text that you chose along with your interpretation/reflection of each text. In addition, include your sources in MLA format.

If you used videos, pictures, artwork, etc. already in the previous blogs you may reuse them!  Just include your interpretation/reflection on each!

  1. Chop Suey, A metal song by "System of a Down" is a song that was negatively impacted by 9/11. The song in was released before 9/11 during August. Unfortunately 9/11 happened and the song had the lyric "Self Righteous suicide". The radio refused to play the song due to the line so the song was negatively impacted. I personally believe the song had no negative message and did not deserve to be taken off air.
911, a rap song by the Gorillaz feat. D12 and Terry Hall. This song was written during a D12 tour after 9/11 Eminem met up with the Gorillaz to make this song to talk about the tragedy. The song has dark lyrics with a slow and dark musical background. I personally see the dark message but it really only sounds like a regular D12.
After 9/11 many people dealed with the pain creatively. An example is the poem "Firefighters prayer" written by David Cochrane. His poem is about the perspective of a fireman after the attack as he goes through the building. The poem is intense and is well written. I enjoyed its intensity.
An amazing movie that was heavily influenced by 9/11 is the movie "My Name is Khan" directed by Karan Johar. This movie is a heart warming tale of a man who sets out from his home after his son's death to prove that not all Muslim's are terrorists after a rise of anti-muslim activity at his home that resulted in the death of his son. I never even watched the movie and just reading the wikipedia page for this movie touched me this movie is clearly worth watching.

  2. Song: You’re Missing by Bruce Springsteen
The song “You’re Missing” by Bruce Springsteen explains the “reality of a post-9/11 world for many families” (yahoo). The line “too much room in my bed, too many phone calls…You’re missing” shows how family’s have trouble moving on from their loved ones death because they died so suddenly; they feel like their family member is still alive because just that morning their “shirts in the closet, shoes in the hall”.
Artwork: 9/11 National Tribute Quilt by the Steel Quilters of United States Steel Corporation
The “National Tribute Quilt” is a representation of the New York City skyline with the twin towers in the middle. Also “each three-inch-square block bears the name of one person who perished in the disaster”. This Artwork is a tribute to those that died in the attacks and recognizes them by putting each of their names on the quilt. To me the quilt represents how 9/11 greatly changed America forever.
Poem: I Hold in My Hands by Aaron Walsh
The poem “I Hold in My Hands” explains the fear felt after 9/11. The author writes that holding the dust “has damaged my body with fear” (Celebrate American Holidays). After 9/11 it was hard for some people to live because of the shock they were in. At the same time he “hopes for peace” because that will let us move on. Without a doubt 9/11 affected most people on many levels and this poem exposes the emotions connected with that day.
Short Story: 9/11’s Romance by Sunshine
This short story is written in the perspective of someone who may have been trapped in the tower and knew they had no hope of escape. The author writes, “the first sign that started things going out of control was the screams from our floor and other floors” (good reads). Knowing that you are going to die can sometimes be worse than just dying. The characters had time to prepare for their death, but I felt sorry for them because they could not continue their lives together. Dying so suddenly from an attack like this is something that should never happen to anyone and this short story bring out how good, average, innocent people died that day.

  3. A song by Bruce Springsteen called “The Rising” reveals the hardships that many heroes went through on 9/11. This song is specifically about the firemen who had a tough time doing their job. This song tells us that the heroes had to overcome extreme obstacles to attempt to save lives and keep people safe. Bruce sings, “Can't see nothin' in front of me…
Can't see nothin' coming up behind…I make my way through this darkness…I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me…Lost track of how far I've gone…How far I've gone, how high I've climbed…On my back's a sixty pound stone…On my shoulder a half mile of line.” This shows us that the firemen had a difficult time seeing what was in front of them. It also seems to me as if the attack on 9/11 was out of their reach, but they were able to do whatever they could to keep as many people safe as possible. That shows how courageous the firefighters on ground zero truly were.

A poem by Elaine (last name unknown) called "The Entenmann's Lady" tells us about a woman who fed people suffering on ground zero. This is a very symbolic poem because it shows how many of the heroes were just everyday people, who went out of their way to help. The poem says, “Suzan is one of those heroes, who ran before being asked. She knew the horror and suffering there and performed one of life's greatest tasks.” This explains how she did not wait to learn about what has happened, she just wanted to help as soon as possible. This shows me how much patriotism some of the citizens have.

Paul Greengrass wrote and directed a movie in 2006 called “United 93”. This is an extremely sad movie that shows the courageousness and pride of the passengers on flight 93. This movie is very meaningful to me because it shows how these amazing passengers were able to mess up the terrorist’s suicide mission. The passengers on this flight are American heroes who will never be forgotten for what they did. Even though this plane crashed, they were able to reroute the plane to save many other people who could have been near the original target of the terrorist. There is a quote in this movie that says, “Never let fear take over.” This is very meaningful because the passengers knew they were going to die, but they were able to do what they could to stop the terrorists.

Lastly, the most famous photograph taken on 9/11 was called “Falling Man”. This image taken by Richard Drew is extremely difficult to look at. It is a close up image on someone jumping out of the World Trade Center to get away from the suffocating dust. This is a symbolic picture to me because it shows how people in the World Trade Center had a decision on how they wanted to die and it was tremendously courageous of them to jump out of the burning building because it showed how they were “jumping to freedom” in a way. They were escaping what was going on inside the twin towers. That is how I interpret this influential photograph.

Four days before 9/11, Ryan Adams just finished filming his video for his song, “New York, New York”, in front of the World Trade Center to pay a tribute to the city where he grew up. Post 9/11, he wrote a song “My Blue Manhattan” that pays a tribute to the people that lost their lives. It also pays a tribute to the city of New York that really went through hell after these September 11 attacks. He utter lines like “Too hurt to move” which is really a reflection on the people in New York that were not able to move for pretty much two reasons. One reason is that they were so emotionally damaged by losing a love one at the 9/11 attacks that they could not even move, or it was a reflection of the people that were so scared after the attacks, that they did not want to go anywhere because of fear of another possible bombing. Ryan Adams refers to New York City, as a she in this song, saying how there is fire and rain everywhere. This is representing all of the debris and ashes falling from the sky when the building fell it was almost like it were rain. Also he sings “snows coming down, on cars in the midtown” shows how there was debris falling all over cars and people. The song “My Blue Manhattan”, by Ryan Adams represents the horrors of 9/11, and the horrific aftermath.
“United We Stand” by Jen Schwartz was a beautiful poem written following 9/11. This poem is a short poem, mainly focusing on the events that happened all day that day, followed by a stanza explaining how USA has prospered from this horrific event. The lines “An airplane crashed thru building one, next thing they know building two was done”, is an example of how the first plane crashing was so shocking, and then the second plane hit just like that, and everyone in the city was terrified. The lines “They watch policemen and firefighter strive, to see if their loved ones are still alive”, is a reflection of the people who lost loved ones on 9/11. It basically says how they were rushing to the buildings, watching policemen and firemen storm the building, hoping they come out with their loved ones body. The final lines “This event did not break the U.S.A., because we are closer and closer to each other everyday”, shows how America has grown as a country following the attacks, and we are closer to each other everyday. “United We Stand by Jen Schwartz is a great 9/11 poem.
“9/11’s Romance” by Sunshine is a great short story about 9/11. It is about two people, Jarred and Kelly who work in the same office building together on the 84th floor of the North Tower. The plane hits and they do not know what happened. They realize they are about to die. Jarred admits he loves Kelly. Then they hold hands and jump out the window. This is a reflection of all the people who had fulfilling lives to live that were cut short by these attacks. This short story shows how sad it was for people, that these peoples young lives were cut short. Reading this poem makes the reader sad about all the people that died at 9/11. “9/11’s Romance” by Sunshine is an emotional short story about two people at 9/11 that got their lives cut short.

    1. “World Trade Center” was a movie created in 2006; it is a true story about two police officers that got trapped under the South Tower, the first tower that fell, when it fell. It was directed by Oliver Stone, written by Andrea Berloff and John McLoughlin, and Nicholas Cage and Michael Peña were the two main actors. This specific creative piece about 9/11 reflects on those brave souls who went into the Twin Towers in order to save lives. These two policemen went through a lot of hard work to stay alive, and it showed the hard times that other policemen went through. Many of their friends died during their horrific experience. In the end of the movie, these two policemen were saved after two long days, but many other people in their situation were not so fortunate. “World Trade Center”, directed by Oliver Stone was a shout out to the brave firemen and policemen who gave their lives to save people from the World Trade Center.

I personally think that this piece of artwork is a perfect representation of what 9/11 truly was. This photo could either be representing a family trying to find safety or people helping each other out. This goes back to the point, about how on 9/11 no matter who you were we were all Americans.

The album Bleed American by the band Jimmy Eat World was changed to a self-titled album after 9/11 due to the title. I personally think that this shouldn’t have happened because it shows that we were weakened by the terrorists and we let little things like album names get to us. Overall, things like album names and other things shouldn’t have been changed to due events like this, even though it was tragic changing something like that makes us look like cowards.
    Batzer, Marge. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 May 2012. .
The poem Cross Admist the Ruins by Marge Batzer truly touches those affected by 9/11. It talks more about the victims saved during 9/11 compared to those that were lost. It says that those who were saved overshadowed those who died. The main point of the poem was a picture taken after the towers collapsed and all the rubble settled was a cross sticking out of the ground. It talks about how the cross is a sign for all the survivors and victims to show that there is hope and we can move on from this.

The Movie World Trade Center, directed by Oliver Stone is about NYPD officers helping people in the World Trade Center. It talks about a group of NYPD officers going into the South Tower trying to help civilians. They end up getting trapped as the tower begins to collapse. They end up being saved by U.S Marines. This movie touched 9/11 victims because the lives that were saved that day overshadowed those who died.

Art Spiegelman’s cover from the September 24, 2001 edition of the New Yorker is called “9/11/01.” On the cover the Twin Towers are only a black outlining against a slightly lighter sky. At first glance, it is hard to tell what is being portrayed in the image. I feel that the artwork represents loss, depression, and the shock that all Americans felt. I think that Art Spiegleman made the colors this way because he wanted to make people realize the sadness and despair that the absence of these towers and people brought.

An untitled photograph by Christopher Anderson published in the 10th anniversary 9/11 edition of the New Yorker depicts a number of helmets on the ground from firefighters who lost their lives in the inferno on 9/11. Looking at the image, I am surprised by the remaining elements of these people. All that is left of them is their helmets, and yet we remember them still. Though their bodies are gone, their memories and their acts of service remain.

The song “My City of Ruins” by Bruce Springsteen reflects on the loss of those in 9/11. This song exemplifies the sorrow felt in New York City and the nation right after the attacks on the Twin Towers. Then he asks God for courage and strength in order to “rise up” and heal. At the beginning of the song it’s just him singing very slowly and softly, but later other people join him in his call for strength. This represents strength in numbers to help rebuild New York City. He repeats a lot of phrases because it is like a call to action.

The Lady Liberty statue was anonymously and randomly placed in front of the West 48th Street and 8th Avenue firehouse right after 9/11. The firehouse lost 15 of its members on 9/11. Becoming a true piece of public artwork, people began to put items that showed patriotism, unity, hope, and remembrance towards those who died in 9/11. It is currently at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. I noticed that on the statue there are flags of countries other than the United States, for example Puerto Rico, Ireland, and Australia. I believe that this shows that people all around the world are supporting America and were affected by the attacks. From paper cranes to photos to personal letters everyone worldwide is united in their hope and pain in response towards what happened at the World Trade Center. Becoming a piece of collaborative public art, all people who contributed their memories are its artists.

  8. The song “The Rising” by Bruce Springsteen illustrates the difficulties heroes faced on 9/11. Some lyrics are about how the firemen cannot see around them. This can be interpreted as the firemen not having control of what happens but it is also literal. The heroes of 9/11 had to overcome extreme hardships to try and save peoples lives. This song exemplifies the heroism and courageousness the heroes of 9/11 occupied.

The poem “The Day the Towers Fell” is written by an unknown author. The poem talks about the reactions of Americans when they found out about the attack. Some were silenced because of there sadness and some were infuriated and wanted to go to war. The Middle East praises the attacks and “Allah has done his good.” At the end of the poem, the author states that America will get revenge. The poem is very uplifting because it gives hope that America will have its revenge.

The photo “Escaping New York shows people running away from Manhattan after the World Trade Center Collapsed. After the towers collapsed there was a lot of smoke and dust, which is in the background of the photo. Some people are wearing masks and there is an ambulance going into the smoke. The picture shows the destruction of the 9/11 attacks. Also, it illustrates how many people the tragic day impacted.

The movie World Trade Center was created in 2006 and it is a true story about some heroes of 9/11. There are two police officers that got trapped under the South Tower as it fell. The movie focuses on the heroes that went into the buildings to save people’s lives. The film exemplifies the hardships police officers went through in order to save people. In the case of these two police officers, they survived but many others were not fortunate enough. This movie shows the heroism of the firemen and policemen that risked their lives to help others.

  9. The song "Harbour" by Moby was written in 2002 after Moby watched the towers of the World Trade Center burn and crumble in front of his eyes on the morning of his birthday. He watched from the rooftop of his apartment in Manhattan and describes the scene in his song, saying that "the roof seems so inviting a vantage point is gained to watch the children fighting". To me it seems that Moby felt as if all life had stopped and the world was coming to an end as he watched this tragedy.

The song "Rising" was written by Bruce Springsteen after watching the attacks on the World Trade Center from his home in New Jersey. The song is from the perspective of a NYC firefighter and focuses on the chaos and fear that went on that morning. There is a religious aspect to this song where Springsteen says how even though the sky is filled with black smoke, when he looks up towards the sky to God, he sees loneliness and emptiness.

The poem "If Only" by Adam Quin was written in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks. In his poems he shares the feelings of a citizen in Manhattan watching the towers burn and the shock they experienced. He later goes on to say that "if only the moon stayed up if only the sun hadn't woke, if only everyone were late for work they would have been warned off by the smoke, if only". He is saying that if these things happened, maybe there wold have not been so much death, but we cannot change what has already happened.

The poem "Firefighter's Prayer" by David Cochrane was written in response to 9/11, where he states that he just needed to find a way to express his feelings of what he witnessed that day. The poem is from the perspective of a firefighter on the day of the attacks. He talks about how they had trained for fighting fires, running up hot stairwells and that they knew what needed to be done. However, what was happening on that morning for some reason took that all away and they needed to pray to God for an answer.

  10. Graphic design by a french street artist known as WK Interact is an artistic genre that give tribute to the first responders of 9/11. Done in black and white this artistic rendition of the sacrifices people made on that tragic day this piece of art is very strong and evokes a great sense of emotion. This genre is fitting to a 9/11 themed project because it completely show the strong sense of unity Americans had during that time.

“911” by Gorillaz is another genre(song) inspired by the 9/11 attacks. In this song it the message being conveyed is the hate of the terrorist and the extreme loss that Americans had to deal with. This is effective as a genre because it takes the voice of many victims and put in a song about their emotions rather than just stating the events that took place.

Foreword, a poem written by Tim Holloway is a simple genre with an extremely deep meaning. Like that of the Gettysburg Address the literature is short and to the point. Although brief this genre gives a first person depiction of that day and the claustrophobia that was felt throughout the city. This is an effective genre because it gives accurate information about what happened in the city that day and an emotional response to it.

In United 93 a film produced by Paul Greengrass a strong example of a genre is portrayed. This movie which essentially re-enacts the events of 9/11 and the plane that fought back against the terrorists. This is a good genre because in this film the audience is able to see every aspect of 9/11 from every possible angle which makes it very interesting.

The song “Freedom” by Paul McCartney was written in response to 9/11. The song was written the day after the planes crashed into the towers and McCartney saw the planes crash. The song is about how freedom is everyone’s “right given by god” and is an anti war and anti terrorism song. Everyone should have the right to be free from death and sadness.

The poem “Names” by Billy Collins reminds people about the horrible day, 9/11, and the many people that died. He uses real people’s names that died on 9/11 and uses one letter to symbolize each name of the victims. He also uses imagery and metaphors to describe that horrible day.

The photo “Moment of Impact” by Spencer Platt shows both planes crashing into the North and South Towers. It really shows people how extensive the damage was and how serious it was. It shows the buildings on fire and makes u imagine how many people must have died from the crashes and how painful it must have been.

The painting “We Must Never Forget” by Alexander Byron is a great representation of 9/11. It is a painting of 3 firemen raising an American flag with the towers on fire in the background. It shows that even though 9/11 was a tragic event, it will not break America, we are still strong. We will not let that ruin the rest of our lives, the terrorists did not get the best of America.

  13. 1) Harbour by Moby featuring Sinead O'Connor is an interesting song with the interpretation of one named Moby and how the world will have more violence. He wrote these lyrics because he actually woke up to the attacks occurring since he lived only blocks from the World Trade Center towers, and the sounds of explosions and screams scarred him.

    "Songs Inspired by 9/11." Spinner.com. AOL. Web. 31 May 2012. .

    2) "Upon 9/11", a poem written by Matthew Abuelo, is a poem delivering the experience and the real feelings that were in the air the day of the attack. Abuelo talks about how America was in a time of distress and the reigning other powers of the world were aware of it and weren't helping.

    3) "9/11 Love Story" by an anonymous author on a website strictly for short stories, wrote about a touching story related to the 9/11 attacks. The story displays a happy younger man who's in love with a young woman who he plans on proposing to in front of the World Trade Center towers. Unfortunately no stories in this world are straight forward, so there is a twist added to it where her brother works in the south tower and when she goes to visit him the boyfriend tells them he will meet up with them later. As the boyfriend makes his way to the twin towers the plane hits the towers and the boyfriend reaches shame.

    4) The painting I looked at has a police officer and a fireman on the top of a pile of rubble with masks on their face. This is significant because after the twin towers collapsed the police and the firemen were searching through piles of rubble together and trying to save possible survivors. Unfortunately some firemen and police officers died but they are remembered for the valiant efforts for trying to save the people who were suffocating under the debris from the buildings.

  14. The song “You’re Missing” by Bruce Springsteen shows the grief and loss of the families who lost someone in 9/11. “You’re house is waiting. You’re house is waiting. For you to walk in. For you to walk in” shows that nothing else mattered, and all they wanted was for their loved ones to return home. “I got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops” shows how hard it is for the families to move on.

The painting “The Hero” by Khai Nguyen is a painting of a fireman at the remainder of the World Trade Center. He is bent over in the rubble of the buildings. I think this painting is significant because many firemen and policemen gave their lives to save others. They ran into the buildings to help people and some never left.

The poem “I Hold in my Hands” by eleven year old Aaron Walsh shows that every one was affected by the terrorist attacks. He says “Even though I wasn't there,I can still feel it. It has damaged my hands with dirt.It has damaged my heart with sorrow. It has damaged my body with fear, and it has damaged my life with war.” This poem shows that the attacks made everyone scared to live, and everyone grieve for the people that died.

The painting 9/11 is of the firemen lifting the American flag at the site of the attacks. This shows that America is not going to let the terrorist attacks affect us, and that America is going to win the war against terrorism.

  15. The poem "I Hold In My Hands" by Aaron Walsh was written in 2001 in response to the 9 11 attacks. The writer was not in 9 11 but shares his feelings about it. The Writer explains that he hopes for peace in America. "Tuesday" by Five For Fighting was written in 2008 also in response to the 911 attacks. It talks about how tuesday started off as a normal day and quickly turned into a disaster. A picture of superman looking ashamed with the fallen twin towers behind him is in artists view of what happened during the attacks. It shows defeat and sadness.
